#WarriorPoet- THEY KILLED HIM…
Here are a few quotes… “God is your Source!” or… “What have you learned today?” or… “Rule your world, not the other way around!” These are all programmed into my phone to randomly go off throughout the day. I’ve programmed some to appear at the same time every day while others pop up 2 nights per week or 4 mornings per week just to keep me honest and so I’m not being reminded by a routine. This is not me suggesting it to you, it’s just what I do. Oh, here’s another one, “The enemy has game film on you. He knows your tendencies. Don’t let him win!”
“They killed Him”
This is one of the quotes that goes off in my phone as a personal reminder to me of why I do all that I do. It’s a reminder to me of the debt that I owe. Not debt in a sense of being weighed down and depressed by something that I need to repay, but debt in regards to having something paid for me so that I can be free and in return, I will live in accordance with being thankful for that debt being paid for me. Again, this is not me pushing my spiritual beliefs on anyway, this is just what I do, personally…
For some reason, when “The Killed Him” went off the other day, my soul just burst into thanks and appreciation but so many other thoughts came to mind. Thoughts of life sacrifice… Thoughts of symbolism and social change… Thoughts of what my life would be worth (as it pertains to legacy and inspiration after I’m gone) if I too was a struck down, fallen soldier. And more in particular than that, so many names came to mind:
Martin Luther King
Malcolm X
John F. Kennedy
Trayvon Martin
Yusef Hawkins
Sean Bell
Ngo Dinh Diem
Benigno Aquino, Jr.
Mahatma Gandhi
Tupac Shakur
Julius Caesar
Sitting Bull
Che Guevara
Christopher Wallace
John Lennon
Harvey Milk
Anwar Sadat
Franz Ferdinand
Ronald Goldman
Stephen
John The Baptist
Huey P. Newton
Kurt Cobain*
Michael Jackson*
Edgar Allan Poe*
And of course, Jesus…
Some of these men had views that you can relate to. Some didn’t. Some of these men had an outspokenness and above average talents and abilities. But these men were killed and their deaths were attached to a pivotal part of time, space and history. I’m sure there are hundreds of others that you can add to this list. My point is, with true (righteous) manhood being a lacking resource, especially in the Black community, the life and importance of a stronger male presence is so needed. I thank you women for being such an awesome force in our society and picking up so much of the slack that men have left behind. And because of that, I urge you all to look at the men we’ve lost at the hands of other men, and focus on the men we still have around… Your father… Your brother… Your husband/boyfriend… Your male co-worker… and keep them encouraged. Men don’t publicly make it known that we need and want encouragement but we do. So I ask that you make it an ongoing habit to send a text or e-mail or tweet or facebook post or greeting card or e-mail or phone call or visit, expressing your appreciation for that guy(s).
The reason that men hold on to trophies, and old football jerseys and stuff like that is because they are reminders of a time when he was publicly appreciated, cheered, and even had his ego stroked. He felt like a hero. Sports are so popular among men because (whether we admit it or not) we look to these athletes to act out the hero in us that we can’t act out ourselves on a daily basis. But let’s start to counter that by actually making the men in our lives feel like casual heroes. Don’t wait until they’re gone, let’s do it now and hopefully use that self-assurance to galvanize a new revolution, and resurgence in our men.
