#WarriorPoet- iLOVE HER
She watched my small eyes open up… She watched my tiny mouth let out a gargle… She placed her thumb in my palm and I gripped it. Prior to that, Just before her husband walked in holding a loaf of new life wrapped in small blankets, she waits in anticipation in both shock and amazement at the road she just travelled for 9 months. But before that she lay on a hospital table in a recovery room, shaking and having her (what would eventually be the first of 3) Caesarian incision stitched up. Previously, she woke up at about 6:30am to realize that her water had broken yet ironically she dozed back off to be awakened by her first contraction that followed at 8am causing her and her husband to rush to Landstuhl Military Hospital in Landstuhl Germany. But before all of that, she enjoyed several months of cake decorating, crocheting, swimming, and partying on Zweibrücken Air Base as her husband would DJ bringing their Brooklyn flavor to the German scene. Years leading up to that, she worked at a law firm, sang in her church choir and was the live wire of her social crew under the nickname “Snoopy” (A name given to her by a child hood friend named Steve who worked at the meat market near her Tompkins Projects housing development). But at the beginning of it all, On the Campus of Brooklyn College, Boy meets girl… Girl likes being met by boy… And Lenny started to pursue and take an interest in Marie. Thank you, Lenny Bennett for being the ultimate stencil for Manhood in my life as my father and now one of my closest friends…

But, Thank you Marie for being the portal through which I entered this planet and have the opportunity to even have opportunities. I know for a fact that Flo & LeMar feel the same way. Mom, you have always been there for me in any and every compartment of life. You have been a mother figure to literally hundreds of people over the years. I remember you teaching crochet classes on the front porch to all girls on the block when were kids on the 80′s. I remember you baking 50, 60, 70 cupcakes for my elementary school birthday parties. I remember you and dad letting most of my little league football team sleep over (20+ kids) and then making them breakfast the next morning AND taking them, in several shifts, to the field for the afternoon game we had. I remember you helping me with my calamine lotion and baking soda solution when I had chicken pox. And the memories in addition to those are countless.
You are the barometer by which I measure women, and the type of woman who I hope all women hope to be like. I tell you that I love you as often as I can but today, I want to make it publicly known that you are the meaning of “Womanhood” by my life’s dictionary and I love you.
Happy Mother’s Day, mom…
And a Happy Mother’s Day to all of you beautiful women who share in the Warrior Poet experience. Whether you have children or will have children one day… Or may never have children, this post is in celebration of womanhood and all that you ladies do for our planet. Thank you!
