#WarriorPoet- BE PATIENT? BUT HOW?!?

First off, I want to apologize for the time-lapse since my last post. I’m working hard at making sure that you all have a post from Sunday thru Thursday… Friday’s off, and then a Vlog (Video Blog) on Saturday afternoons. I’d eventually want to get it to me giving you a 1-2 minute Vlog everyday but.. well… put it this way, I now have TWO personal assistants so that should speak for how full my plate is these days. My assistant’s names are Sheenah & Nini. <<< Feel free to click and follow them and/or say hello. They’re the coolest chicas ever. Tell em I sent you. Anyway, at the end of the day, it’s all about me serving you, so as we progress, I’ll keep you all posted on all of my moves. Now…

I had a friend text me at 3am the other day asking for a Bible scripture that had to do with “Patience.” I responded with an answer. When I woke up the next morning, I called them to check on them because I thought it was a bit odd that they contacted me at that time of the morning and on that particular subject matter. They said, “Kelz, I’m over here about to pull my hair out. My life is going through changes and I’m doing what I need to do to adjust but things aren’t happening fast enough. Everyone is telling me to be patient but what does that really mean?!?” All I could do was laugh. Reason being, people always compliment me for my patience. They look at what I go through in both my career, personal, and even financial life and wonder how I’ve put in all that I’ve put in, yet it appears the ROI doesn’t match. I told my friend, “It’s almost like being a kid who doesn’t know how to ride a bicycle. All of the other kids are speeding by on their’s and you’d love to join them but you can’t. And when you go to seek help, the only advice you get is… ‘Just go ride’ lol! That’s probably the worst advice you could ever get because if you knew how to ride, that’s what you’d be doing!!!” We both laughed together.

I told them that the key to being patient aka mellow aka laid back aka stress free, is what’s called “Expectation Management.” You want to manage your expectations. For example, if Jim asks me to borrow $20 and says that he’ll pay it back on Tuesday by 2pm, most people will expect it to be paid back by Tuesday at 2pm. Me? I don’t expect it to be paid back at all. Reason being… If Jim doesn’t pay me back by that time OR doesn’t pay me back at all, I might bring it up but it won’t really matter since I managed my expectation. However, if he DOES pay me back, then I might even be happy and feel like I received a gift since I got something that I wasn’t expecting, which is exactly what a gift is, isn’t it?

Use that “Jim pay-back” example with people saying they’re going to call you back, or with results of your own work, or even with people showing up to places on time, or keeping their word. You have to manage your expectations. Don’t expect people to be great, don’t expect results to be excellent… Not because people don’t have that ability (because they do) and not because your ROI can’t be excellent (because it can) but because you want the greatness and the excellence to look like gifts when they show up, and you want them to just roll off your back if/when they don’t show up because you weren’t expecting them in the first place. There are basic things that we all expect. We expect respect, and for people to say “You’re welcome” when we hold a door, and a “Bless You” when we sneeze… But I’m sure there were times when those things didn’t even happen. In a nut-shell, just put your head down, and do you. Do all that you can do, and hope for the best but expect very little. That puts you in a position to be less stressed, to be more appreciative of the things that do work in your favor, AND it lends itself to humility…

Below is one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s both serious and hilarious at the same time but if you pay attention to the lyrics, it’ll give you even more of an illustration of how managing expectations can be helpful in certain scenarios…
